Nowadays, Dolby Vision and HDR have become an important criterion for measuring image quality, and at the same time, it has also become a selling point. So what exactly are these two technologies? What is the difference between them in terms of image quality?

Dolby Vision is a dynamic HDR format in which the contrast range of an image is determined scene by scene or even frame by frame. With Dolby Vision, the display can communicate information to the source about its maximum brightness, as well as its contrast ratio, and can then dynamically "tone map" the video content.

In terms of brightness, the brightness of Dolby Vision can reach 4000nits, and the brightness of HDR 10 is only 1000nits.

At Bit Depth (Bit Depth refers to the amount of gradient that describes the color in an image), Dolby Vision content allows up to 12 bits of color, and HDR 10 only has a maximum of 10 bits. This may not sound like a big difference, but in fact, 10-bit color is equal to 1.07 billion colors, while 12-bit color has 68.7 billion colors, and the displayed image will be more realistic.

In addition, Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata, HDR 10 uses static data, and Dolby Vision is better than HDR 10 in screen display.

Why do projectors rarely have Dolby Vision?

Projectors have limited light output compared to regular TVs. A projector is different from a TV in that it can't cast pure black, the contrast ratio is still a lot worse than a TV, and Dolby Vision is a basic high dynamic range variant, it's dynamic at its maximum and minimum brightness, so Projectors currently struggle to meet Dolby Vision certification standards. But some projectors with better technology can support HDR 10 which is not so demanding.
